Discover Shotley by e-bike
Starting from the EEZYBIKE pods at Shotley Marina, you can explore a remarkable stretch of the Suffolk coast where the Rivers Orwell and Stour meet. Stop to enjoy the views across the water towards Harwich, Landguard Fort and the Port of Felixstowe, then visit the HMS Ganges Museum at the marina. From 1905 until 1976, Shotley Gate was home to the Royal Navy’s HMS Ganges training establishment, through which around 160,000 young recruits passed. Other reminders of the area’s military history include the surviving ceremonial mast, two Martello towers built during the Napoleonic Wars and the remains of the Victorian Shotley Battery.
For a longer ride, follow the quiet roads through Shotley village and the surrounding peninsula. St Mary’s Church has medieval origins and two Commonwealth war cemeteries, while nearby Erwarton is home to an impressive historic gatehouse and a church traditionally said to hold the heart of Anne Boleyn. You can also continue towards the picturesque riverside hamlet of Pin Mill, known for its sailing heritage, waterside views and traditional pub. With estuary scenery, historic villages and plenty of places to stop along the way, the Shotley Peninsula is an ideal area to discover by e-bike.
